Hereditary Angioedema:
Hereditary angioedema was first described in 1888.
This is a rare disease affecting 1 in 25,000 persons.
Symptoms consist of recurrent skin swellings, abdominal discomfort
and recurrent edema involving voice box (the larynx). The later
can be fatal, as it can shut of the airway.
Diagnosis is made by checking C 1 Esterase level in the blood.
Treatment includes long term prophylaxis with attenuated androgens,
tranexamic acid and C1 INH concentrate.
If you suspect above disease, you should see an Allergy Specialist
and discuss your concerns.
